On Tuesday, Ed Silverman wrote that ‘it is time to scrap this prohibition’ on importing prescription drugs from abroad, unless Congress can find another way to drive down the high cost of prescription drugs in the U.S.
He points out that Americans overwhelmingly support prioritizing lowering the high cost of drugs. Yet the problem is getting worse as new high-priced drugs hit the market. As Big Pharma has a long history of blocking every attempt to allow Americans to import prescription drugs from other countries.
Silverman raises the concern that allowing importation could increase the threat of counterfeit medicines into the U.S. But he emphasizes that this does not mean that importation is not possible, it does mean that safeguards must be put in place. Safeguards that would be required through implementation of current legislative proposals.
